I’ve noticed that people tend to root for teams in their area. For example, my family and I live in Phoenix, and both of my parents and my two older brothers all root for the Diamondbacks. They say this is because we live in Arizona, and you’re supposed to "suppport your own."
Personally, I could never cheer for the D-backs. The Cardinals have always been the team I pull for, and I think you root for a team because you like the players, not because of geography.
As a side note, the last Diamondbacks-Cards series was a hoot to watch lol.
Do you think it’s silly to root for a team strictly based on geography?
No. It’s hometown pride. They represent your state so you should root for them.
Personally, i feel a little nobility involved in rooting for a team based on geography. It’s like you cheering for your kids at a soccer game IN A WAY. Having said that, there is absolutely nothing wrong with rooting with a team because of the players in my opinion. Just don’t be a bandwagon fan.
We’re all free to choose what teams we do and don’t like. I prefer the local teams. For me, part of it is local pride, since I’m proud to be from NYC.
In my opinion, if you’re going to say it’s silly to root for a team based on geography, you might as well point out that it’s silly to root for millionaire ballplayers who don’t know you exist in a game that has zero affect on your life.
It’s not silly at all. Whether its baseball or any other sport, I support the local teams because they are the ones that support the local area. They not only support the economy by bringing people into the areas around the stadium (The reason city officials will fight to gain and keep teams in their area). Also each professional team comes with several charitable organizations that the players create that typically help people in the area. The other reason why it makes sense is that most people who really support a team also want to actually see that team play in person. That gets hard to do often if your team plays a thousand miles away. Also it makes it easier to root for a team over a long period of time since of the players that you like on your teams now, almost none will be on the same team in 10 years.
No, it’s perfectly understandable.
There’s a certain amount of loyalty we have for our hometown. We root for hometown teams because they represent our area. For my city of Chicago, the Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks, White Sox, and (believe it or not) even the Cubs represent the Chi.
When D-Rose got injured in the playoffs for the Bulls, the whole city went down with him. He meant so much to the city…..he grew up in Englewood (one of the worst neighborhoods in the nation) and went to help the Bulls win, representing all of Chicago.

The White Sox had much of the city behind them in the playoffs, it was crazy. If fans were scattered all over the place, it wouldn’t have the same effect.
Plus, the media covers the team…..I get news on the White Sox delivered right to my door in the newspaper and all the local television covers them.
Now I’ll use Arizona as an example. If I lived in Chicago my whole life but liked the Diamondbacks, they would be my favorite team, but I could never really relate in that I’ve never lived in Arizona or have any connections. There’s only pride in the team, the Diamondbacks, and not the “Arizona” on their jerseys.
Being a fan based on geography is like an identity.
It’s hometown pride that’s the reason behind it. I’m a huge White Sox, Bears, Blackhawks and Bulls fan. I’m a White Sox fan because I’m from the Southside and have long standing family allegencies to the team. I could never root for the Cubs though.
Well it depends, like for me I was born in Texas and live in California. I always vote for Rangers and don’t care much for the Angels (compared to Rangers). I just like to vote for the team that feels most like it’s at home and have another team from somewhere else to vote for like the White Sox.
